Cross-selling works best when the products are connected by a customer need.
It should not feel like adding unrelated products to the shopping cart.
Start With the Main Product
Suppose the customer is buying a camping chair.
Ask:
What else makes this product more useful?
Possible answers:
- Table
- Lighting
- Storage
- Drink accessories
The relationship is obvious.
Build Product Chains
Examples:
Backpack → Water Bottle → Safety Accessory
Camping Chair → Table → Light
Road Trip Bag → Storage → Hydration
These combinations can be presented as collections or recommendations.
Cross-Sell by Activity
Instead of:
“You may also like…”
consider:
“Complete your weekend camping setup.”
The second approach explains why the products belong together.
Avoid Too Many Recommendations
A small number of highly relevant products is usually easier for customers to understand than a large collection of unrelated recommendations.
The objective is relevance.
