A supplier relationship is more than a single transaction.
For a small retailer, reliability can be just as important as product price.
Product Capability
Ask:
- What products does the supplier specialize in?
- How consistent is the product range?
- Can they provide samples?
- Can specifications be customized?
Communication
Good communication matters particularly when something goes wrong.
Evaluate whether the supplier:
- Responds clearly
- Provides complete information
- Understands requirements
- Communicates delays
MOQ Flexibility
Small businesses should understand whether the supplier can support smaller test orders.
This can be particularly important during the early stage of a product category.
Production and Lead Time
Ask how lead times are calculated.
Clarify whether quoted time means:
- Production only
- Processing only
- Production plus dispatch
Quality Consistency
A good sample is not enough.
The supplier should be capable of producing future orders consistently.
Reorder Capability
A product that sells well can create a new problem if the supplier cannot replenish it reliably.
Ask about:
- Repeat production
- Standard specifications
- Material availability
- Seasonal changes
Customization
If private label may become part of your future strategy, understand what the supplier can support:
- Logo
- Packaging
- Labels
- Colors
- Product modifications
The best supplier for a standard wholesale product may not necessarily be the best supplier for customization.
